Siem Reap - Angkor Wat 🛕

Our first of two Cambodia stops, Siem Reap, which is home to Angkor Archaeological Park. I had definitely heard of Ankor Wat but until this trip I doubt could of answered where or what it is. The Park is huge, it includes Angkor Wat alongside hundreds of other structures which once formed the Khmer Empire. Today it is one of the most important Aarchaeological sites in the world. Which is why I find it crazy how millions of people are allowed to walk all over it every year, not that I'm complaining, I feel very lucky to have been, maybe I'm just used to barriers and signs saying keep off!

We had a full day at the temples, using a tuk tuk and driver from our hostel which drove us around. You can buy 1,3, or 7 day tickets, due to limited time (and money) we just went for one day but there is so much and its so big you could definitely go day after day and see something new. We went to 10 temples altogether starting with the Angkor Wat and finishing on my favourite Ta Prohmn. They're all memorising, you feel like you've travelled to a time when humanity has long gone and the trees are reclaiming everything.

Whilst staying in Siem Reap we had a lovely stroll along the river which is central and it looks like it's paths are recent additions. We went to the Royal Independence Gardens which is home to a colony of Flying Foxes which I'm always surprised by the size of.

We spent an afternoon a bit out the city at Angkor Putt, a Angkor Wat themed mini golf, which was a fantastic find by Matt. Getting there I got slightly worried as we ended up on dirt tracks with a lost tuk tuk driver and us giving directions from the back but it was worth it. I started well but in usual form I can't keep up the precision, so Matt claimed the victory.

Another day we spent a lovely few hours at the Ankgor Botanical Gardens, they're free to enter and offer lovely selection of plants, flowers, ponds, water features, and fresh air. There were more butterflies flying round than I've ever seen, so well worth a visit.

We've took time to chill out a bit here, which you have to do in the heat. We have become quite accustomed to staying places with pools now which is great when you've been out for the day and then head back for a late afternoon dip, we've often found ourselves having the pool totally to ourselves. Our last evening we spent out on Pub street, which is an area for tourists basically. There's plenty of bars and restaurants, many playing music too loud for us, but we had some food and drinks and soaked up the atmosphere.

We're now on our bus heading to Phnom Pehn and, like some other places we've been, Cambodia has a troubled past which I hoping to learn more about whilst in the capital. Im also hoping it might cool down a bit, but I don't think there's much chance of that!

Lots of love,
Lisa and Matt 💕
