Split - Beach life 🏖

We've been living the ultimate beach life in Split and it's been wonderful. Our airbnb let us check-in early which was brilliant as our ferry arrived in Split at 7am, and our original check in was 3pm, but by 11am we were throwing our bags down in the apartment. After a bit of a chill, we headed through the old town and up into Park Marjan which gives lovely views over Split and has lots of little stone buildings dotted around. We also saw plenty of Butterflies, such as the Old World Swallowtail and the Tree Grayling which even let me get a picture!

Our walk took us up to Telegrin Peak, for the views, but our destination was Kašjuni beach. Its a bit of a walk from the city, but because of the that the beach is cleaner and supposedly less busy (unless you turn up late in the day in a super sunny July). However, the water is just so clear and a delight to swim in, much needed after our walk. We stayed late into the evening, getting the bus back to town.

Our next day sent us exploring the old town, which is full cats which means my mission to not stroke cats went straight out of the window. About half of the old town is the Diocletian's Palace, which is the remains of an old fortress so there are huge city walls with gates on each side. It's very easy to just walk the streets, following your nose and experience the interesting feel of the place. We headed then onto one of the close beaches to make sure we'd had a swim that day before heading back to catch the Olympic opening ceremony.

We treated ourselves the next day with a speedboat trip that took us out to three locations out on some of the Islands. First out to Labadusa beach where we borrowed some goggles to look for fish, then on to the Blue Lagoon where the goggles came in useful to look for black spiny sea urchins on the sea floor (we saw plenty), and then on to Trogir, a UNESCO World Heritage site which has a Venice feel about it. The speed boat was, of course, very fun as well.

Back in Split we had a evening at the beach to watch the sunset and have a swim in the fading light which was a perfect way to end our time there. On our way back to the apartment though we could hear some wonderful harmonies and following them lead us to the National Theatre where a 5 singers were performing alongside a keyboard player who just sounded fantastic. They were getting the audience to join in, which as it was all in Croatian was quite difficult, but so enjoyable all the same.

We've just boarded our last Flixbus to Sarajevo, and our longest of the trip at about 6 hours, so the next post will the the last one from Europe as we head further afield from there.

Lots of Love,
Lisa and Matt 💕
