Bangkok - Kop khun ka 🙏🏼
We had a bit of a whistle stop tour of Bangkok, as we decided to just have 2 nights. We arrived in the dry and headed straight out to the Khaosan Road for food and saw the dark clouds looming. We sat down under cover to eat just before the heavens opened, so didn't spend too much time wandering about.
If you read any must-see lists about Bangkok, then the Grand Palace tops them all. However, after spending a bit of money in Chiang Mai we decided to give it a miss as it has a steep entry fee compared to what we've been used too. We still had a walk to it, and luckily the rain stayed away so we headed to look at the river, watching some dancing on the way. We continued on to one of the flower markets which is rows and rows of flower stalls with people making garland and wreaths which are taken and laid at the temples as gifts.
After we went to Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen, it has a selection of things to see including gardens to sit in by the river, and huge Buddah statue (which unfortunately was head to toe in scaffolding) and a big temple which has such gorgeous green ceiling.
Back on the metro and we went to the Bangkok Arts and Culture Centre. There was a small exhibit of children's drawings of their dream cars which we really enjoyed. Each floor had something different going on including an artist from Ukraine, a weird AI photography exhibition, and a sculpture competition with the theme of biodiversity. It was a lovely way to spend a couple of hours.
We then jumped on the bus to head to Lumphini Park, it was a proper old school bus and because of the traffic in the city they do take a while, but we got to where we wanted to be. The park is a real breath of fresh air in the city, and its full of cats. Now I like cats but we counted 49 all together which can't be great for other wildlife! Monitor lizards are also doing well there, we must have seen about 10.
After a breather in the park, and when the sun had set, we headed over to the Night Market in Chinatown and straight back into the chaos. It was incredibly busy but that's what gives these places the buzz and atmosphere you go for. After a long walk about we managed to sit and eat some lovely Pad Thai before retreating to the hostel. We had a weird experience at our hostel as it had no windows, not even in the reception area. You had to go down a lift which opened out onto the street, so we kinda headed down each time hoping for the best weather wise!
The next morning we had time for a short wander before heading off into Cambodia so we walked to the closest park where the roots of large trees were doing a good job of taking over the paths and walkways.
Lots of love,
Lisa and Matt 💕
