Zagreb - A mountain walk ⛰

We've spent two wonderful days in Zagreb, the first exploring the city and the second out in a forest. I'd found a free walking tour to follow online so we used that to see the City's highlights. There was an earthquake in  2020 which the city in still recovering from so many of the buildings are surrounded by scaffolding. Although, I read an article saying it was rare to not see the Catherderal surrounded by scaffolding. The Botanical Gardens were a welcome stop on the tour, a green haven to have a rest in.

There is plenty of street art/graffiti around the city,  my favourite obviously being the road full of cats. We later found the Grič Tunnel, built during WWII as a bomb shelter and a route through the city, it was then left in disrepair until the 90's when it was used for one of the cities first raves.

On our second day we jumped on a bus towards Sljeme, the peak of Medvednica, the mountain above Zagreb. The walk to the summit took about 3 hours, and that was with plenty of breaks as it was about 32°C and we were carrying a lot of water!  The walk was wonderful, we must have seen 100's of lizards scuttling across the path, not staying still for a photograph. Our favourite spot was a huge European Stag Beetle waiting on the path for us. There we're also lots of Brimstone butterflies fluttering about in the sunshine, I manged to snap one as it flew away, they've always been one of my favourites.

When we got to the summit we didn't get the brilliant views you usually associate with reaching the top of a mountain but we were very happy with our walk. We decided to get the cable car down to save us some time and energy and to get the views we expected.

Our next stop is Ljubljana, which we're on our way to now, where we're staying in a Capsule Hostel which is basically a bed in a pod so we'll let you know how that goes!

Lots of love,
Lisa and Matt 💕
