Bratislava - Everyone's eating ice cream 🍦
We arrived in Bratislava to our hottest temperatures yet, about 36°C, hopefully preparing us for things to come. As we walked round the old town we noticed that the majority people seemed to be eating ice cream, but as we're being money conscious we (initially) avoided indulging. The old town of Bratislava is wonderful, cobbled streets with interesting buildings and another statue round the corner.

Back in the city we headed up to the Castle which wasn't far from where we were staying. It has Baroque gardens you can visit free which offer lovely views across the city and the Danube, contrasting the simple white walls of the castle itself.

I didn't know what to expect from Bratislava before getting here but we've really managed to see plenty whilst taking time to relax. We've even manged to watch a few Glastonbury sets, and probably for the first time not wished we were there as I'm pretty happy with where we are right now 😊

We wondered around the streets mostly in the evenings as we got out of the city during the day. On our first full day we took a tram out to Zlate Piesky, translating to Golden Sands, its a lake not far from the city where you can sit, swim, and have a generally relaxing time. Annoyingly, we paid an entrance fee on the one side to soon realise you can get to the lake on the other side for completely free, so more research needs to be done next time!

Our second day and we're heading west out of the city to another castle! Devín Castle sits on a hill above the confluence of the Danube and the Morava. Alongside its spectacular views its has an interesting history due to its proximity to Austria and the Iron Curtain which remained until 1989 to stop the movement of people during the Cold War.
We jumped back on the bus at the castle to get to Sandberg, a sandstone hill offering a dip into nature not far from the city. We sat and ate out lunch here watching a huge colony of Bee Eaters glide through the air, they are wonderfully colourful birds who nest in holes in the sandy walls. It felt lovely and quiet here after the hustle and bustle of people in the city and at the castle.
